O grande Carlos Santana tem um recorde: entre a primeira vez que chegou aos tops (com "Tango", 56ª posição, 1969) e a primeira vez a que chegou a #1 (com este "Smooth") decorreram 30 anos.

Com "Supernatural" (17º álbum, 1999), de onde retirou este single, Carlos Santana inaugurava uma tendência: a de rockers entradotes transfusionarem o seu trabalho com a energia de jovens artistas — na imprensa musical esta trend ficou conhecida como "O Efeito Carlos Santana".
