Donny Hathaway escreveu esta música com Leroy Hutson, em 1970.
Hathaway foi uma figura central na música soul da década de 70 mas, hoje, parece ter sido é remetido para a 2ªdivisão do soul. O que é muito injusto, pois a construção melódica (soul/jazz) e de texto, é muito boa.
"The Ghetto" é uma música com forte componente social e uma óbvia mensagem.
A música tem uma duração de 6 minutos e 50 segundos, o que hoje seria considerado uma extravagância.
O ritmo é contagiante, a interpretação em crescendo e no fim “accionamos” a opção: repetir!
